Designed to Reduce Unsafe Wandering
The Phantom Bus Stop is a thoughtfully designed therapeutic intervention that helps reduce unsafe wandering behaviours among individuals living with dementia.
Strategically placed in a hallway or common area, the Phantom Bus Stop creates a familiar and comforting visual cue for residents who may feel the urge to leave or “go somewhere.” A bench positioned beneath the display (bench not included) provides a welcoming place to sit and “wait for the bus.”
This gentle redirection technique gives staff a natural opportunity to engage. When a resident sits down, a caregiver can join them, begin a conversation, and encourage them to share where they believe they are headed — whether it’s to work, home, or another meaningful destination. Through calm interaction and validation, the resident’s anxiety often decreases, allowing them to feel heard and supported before returning comfortably to their daily routine. The goal is for them to forget they wanted to leave and continue on their day.
