A Hands-On Recipe Activity for Dementia & Memory Care
The Baker's Recipe Activity is a purposeful, step-by-step cognitive activity designed to engage long-term memory, sequencing skills, and recognition in individuals living with Alzheimer’s and dementia.
Participants are invited to “prepare” a familiar baked recipe by selecting the correct ingredient pieces and placing them into a baking dish. Using a simple printed recipe card, they match and choose items such as flour, sugar, eggs, or butter — recreating a classic homemade favourite.
This meaningful activity encourages:
-
Sequencing and task completion
-
Recognition and matching skills
-
Visual scanning and attention
-
Fine motor coordination
-
Reminiscence and conversation about family recipes
-
A sense of purpose and accomplishment
Because baking is often tied to lifelong roles — preparing treats for children, holidays, or Sunday dinners — this activity taps into comforting, deeply rooted memories.
Ideal for:
-
Assisted living and memory care
-
Small group programs
-
One-to-one engagement
-
Occupational therapy settings
Baking memories transforms a familiar kitchen task into calming, dignified cognitive stimulation — without feeling like therapy.
