The Things That Go Together Game is a competency-based activity designed to support cognitive engagement through recognition, matching, and everyday knowledge that remains familiar even as memory changes. By focusing on simple, logical pairings, this activity allows individuals living with dementia to experience success, build confidence, and practice skills through repetition.

Many common object pairs—such as bread and butter or peas and carrots—are deeply rooted in long-term memory. This game taps into those retained associations, making it easier for participants to recognize connections and complete the task without frustration. The familiar pairings naturally encourage conversation, laughter, and reminiscence while reinforcing a sense of competence.

The set includes six durable control mats, each featuring six bold, easy-to-recognize images, along with 36 brightly coloured object cards that logically match the images on the mats. Participants simply match each object card to the corresponding image that “goes together,” strengthening visual recognition, memory recall, and problem-solving skills in a supportive, approachable way.
